Los Arcos

Mirador los arcos de mismaloya near Buenaventura Grand Hotel

island on the ocean

Almost anywhere in town and south of the city you'll be able to see some small islands by the edge of the sea in the South Zone. These are what are locally known as "Los Arcos de Mismaloya," the Arches of Mismaloya, in the past also known as "Las Peñas" (the big rocks) which was when the village was founded. In 1851, the original name was "Las Peñas de Santa María de Guadalupe." Nowadays, they are a very popular day trip destination. Snorkelers, tourists, tour operators and scuba divers visit this place day in and day out. It's very beautiful as a scenic photo-op, but also quite impressive for its natural biodiversity above and below the water. These little islands sport tunnels that go through them, thus the name: the arches.
